- Brisingamen
- In Nordic myth the fiery necklace of Freyja, which she broke in her fury on hearing that the giant Thrym had demanded her hand as a reward for the return of the hammer of Thor. Later Freyja lent the necklace to Thor, who disguised himself as the bride and went in her stead. Other details of the story will be found under Thrym. The tale that the necklace was made by the dwarfs, and that it was only by surrendering herself to four of them that Freyja obtained it, seems to refer to some dispute between the mother goddess and the dwarfs settled by payment of a necklace. In the same manner Odin’s bribing of Loki to steal it must relate to a dispute between the invading Aesir and the goddess. To recover it Heimdall fought Loki daily until he killed him at Ragnarok. It is possible that the necklace was a magic one as an enchantress of the name of Brisin is mentioned in the Arthurian legends. In Scaldic literature it is called Sviagris.
